With my preseason finished and a good showing in the transfer market I am really looking forward to how this season goes as I expect us to do quite a lot this year even though we have practically a new team. We may not start amazingly but I hope after a few games we gel and become unstoppable.

August

There is one game from July in this group of games because I thought it would be a bit easier just to include it as an August fixture.

PSV (Fixtures_ Fixtures)

My debut as PSV boss would be against a little known team in the the Europa League 3rd Qualifying Round called Ventspils and I decided to play mainly my back up players with my first team strikers due to the fact we were playing FC Utrecht a few days later and we actually went down to a very embarrassing defeat as Wuytens gave away a penalty in the 66th minute and they scored it leaving us in disbelief.

We quickly moved on from this game though and with a full strength team we slaughtered FC Utrecht 4-0 at home. We got off to the perfect start as Bernardo scored his first goal for the club and it was a stunner as he curled it in from 25 yards. After that we controlled the game and looking at the stats we really could’ve beat them by more.

PSV v FC Utrecht (Split View)

The second game against Ventspils was much more successful even though I put out the exact same team as I did in the first leg. I think the home advantage really swung the game in our favour and we ran out deserved winners with Marcelo my centre back getting a hat trick. I’m not quite sure why we didn’t really play that well against Feyenoord but it might just have been one of them days where stuff doesn’t quite go your way but I was still quite happy with a draw against them. The game against SC Herenveen was a good win with two players getting their first goals for the club in Araujo and Manga. In the final qualifying round for the Europa League we were up against Maccabi Tel-Aviv who are from Israel and I decied to play my full strength team as I wanted to get this tie won in the first game so i could safely rest players in the second leg but my plan didn’t quite work as we played out a very dull game and it ended 0-0 which is a decent result but I was hoping for a win. This meant that a tired first team had to go to FC Groningen and get a win and they delivered despite us being extremely lucky with both of our goals being own goals. I do believe we deserved to win this game as we created 3 clear cut chances to their 0.

The final game of the month saw us welcome Macabbi Tel-Aviv to thie Philips Stadion where I decided to risk it and play a team with mainly all back ups apart from Araujo and Bernardo and it paid off as we ran out 4-0 winners with both Falk and Araujo getting braces. This is the game where I am hoping Araujo will push on and begin scoring more regularly in the league.

PSV v M. Tel-Aviv (Split View)

Transfers + Injuries

In the game against Feyenoord Jelle Vossen broke his wrist and will be out for around 3 to 4 weeks so I decided to bring in two strikers on loan as without Vossen we only had Araujo as a recognised striker due to Banguras injury.

Federico Macheda (Overview_ Attributes)Yannis Tafer (Overview_ Attributes)

I also made one further signing and he was a young goalkeeper from Colo Colo and he cost me £1.6M.

Michael Gillespie (News_ Inbox)-2Michael Gillespie (News_ Inbox)Michael Gillespie (News_ Inbox)-3

The month started with speculation about a possible takeover lead by a local business man and I have to admit I am a little bit sceptical about it at the minute as I think the current chairman has done well with keeping the money in the club.

PSV (Fixtures_ Fixtures)-3

Back to the footballing side of the game and we began september with an away trip to Roda JC where we won quite comfortably through a header by Manga. We then welcome Dnipro to Eindhoven for our first game in Group H and we played really well grabbing a 2-0 win with teh goal coming from Falk and Araujo. I was really happy with this result as it was a mix of first and second team players. We then lost our first game of the year however and it was complete rubbish as there was a clear foul in the lead up to their goal and when I blasted the referee in the press conference after the game the FA didn’t even say a word to me because everybody who saw the incident knew it was a foul. This had left me in a bad mood after what was actually a good performance we just failed to score the goal we needed. Our first game in the Dutch Cup was against FC Emmen, who were doing well in the Jupiler League at the time, and I played a full team of back ups and we we absolutely brilliant dominating the game from start to finish and ending up with 63% possession and18 shots compared to their 3. The last game of the month was against Ajax and I wasn’t really expecting to much if I’m honest as they were a very strong side with good attackers. We played okay and managed to scrape a scrappy 1-1 draw where we probably deserved to lose in all fairness.

October

Michael Gillespie (News_ Inbox)-5Michael Gillespie (News_ Inbox)-6

The takeover has been completed now but the new chairman has already told me that he doesn’t plan to invest in the club at the minute but it always seems to say this so hopefully he will next season.

PSV (Fixtures_ Fixtures)-5

A few days after the Ajax game we had the task of an away game in Moscow and new it wasn’t going to be easy as they were the best team in my group so I had to play my first team to make sure we didn’t lose by a large margin. We actually did better than I was expecting with a tired team and managed to get the draw. We dominated them in the first half but found ourselves a goal down at half time but we regrouped and nicked a equaliser late on. Another big game followed meaning we had to play three very good teams in a week and this meant my players would play their third game of the week as I couldn’t afford to rotate. We played really well again and managed to get a 2-0 win after Araujo pounced on a mistake by the goalie and Marcelo scored from a corner. Next up were VVV-Venlo where we won 4-0 with ease as we were expected to but the best thing about this game was that Jelle Vossen finally scored his first goal under my management.

Aris v PSV (Split View)

He followed that goal up with a goal against Aris in Europe but the standout player in this game was definitely Bernardo as he scored a fantastic hat trick. As you can see by the statistics we were amazing playing with real style and creating lots of chances and we were unfortunate to concede in my opinion.

We then played relegation candidates Excelsior and Bernardo was still on a high from his exploits in Greece as he scored both of our goals in the 2-0 win. The easiest game of the month was the last game and it was in the Dutch Cup 3rd Round where we played another Jupiler League team and although it was only 1-0 we played quite well with me resting a lot of first team players to give some of the back ups a run out.

November

PSV (Fixtures_ Fixtures)-2

The first game of the month was against NAC Breda and I was expecting an easy win an they just didn’t play very well and we came away with a disappointing draw. Aris were up next and after my 1-5 win against them I played my second team as I thought it would be another easy game and it was if I’m honest, even if it did end 2-1, we dominated and deserved to score any more. Vittesse were up next and they were having a poor season and were in 7th but they still managed to beat us and this sparked me to make changes to my tactics as we were not playing well enough against the bigger sides in the league so I changed a counter attacking direct play style which used three very defensive midfielders and wing backs and it worked as you can see in my next results. The game against De Graafschap was my tester for the new tactic and it worked a treat as we ended up deserved 4-0 winners.

PSV v FC Twente (Split View)

The real test for the tactic would be against FC Twente however as they were above me in the league and playing very well. The new tactic seemed to work really well as we looked dangerous on the break and we found ourselves 2-1 up for most of the match before they scored with second to go to equalise but straight from kick off we attacked and scored the winning goal with the last kick of the game.

The last game of the month was a routine win but I was disappointed with how we conceded two late goals to nearly throw it away.

December

PSV (Fixtures_ Fixtures)-2

Nearly a perfect month in December but we blew it in the last game against FC Utrecht. We started really well getting a 0-4 win away in Ukraine and then followed it up with two 3-1 victories over bottom half teams as you would expect. Bernardo really shone in this new formation and was scoring tons of goals and finally making him worth my high layout of money on him. Although we had already qualified through the Europa League group I still decide to play my best team winning 2-1 against CSKA Moscow but it would cost us as my player were tired for the game against FC Utrecht resulting in a loss.

Michael Gillespie (News_ Inbox)-8

Good to know I am still remembered In Greece as I came second in manager of the year in even though I only spent half a season there during this year. But next up is the league table and will we find ourselves top?

Eredivisie (Overview_ Stages)

Unfortunately we didn’t find our self top of the league but we were second which is one better than the media prediction so I can’t really be to upset. We have had a good first half season and now that we have a more consistent formation with more goals being scored as a result I believe we could really push on and take top spot of Ajax. We were only second on goal difference as well so if I would have beaten FC Utrecht we would have been top by three points which is a bit annoying but I’ll learn from my mistake.

PSV (Squad_ Players)

I have to admit I am quite disappointed with the budget the board have given me and it is down to us not competing in the Champions League this season so it is in no part down to me I feel. This mean I will have to sell players to buy but I am happy with that as it was always my plan anyway. I decided to choose title challenge as I do not believe we are near capable of winning the league quite yet.

Transfers

As you can see from teh screenshot below I have been an extremely busy manager this preseason with a whopping £79.5 Million being exchanged both ways in the act. It seems really ridiculous now that I look at it but I managed to make some really big signings on a budget of £4.8 Million spending £45.5 Million (£10 Million of which was spent by the previous manager for Manga) and receiving £34 Million from sales.

PSV (Transfers_ History)

Ins

Bruno Ecuele Manga as i have mentioned was signed by the previous manager just before he was sacked. He has yet to play for the club but I am very glad he has came because he is a beast at centre back.

Bruno Ecuélé Manga (Overview_ Attributes)

Iago Falque was brought in on loan and I will probably not be using him that much because I have managed to sign a few better CAM’s so I will probably cancel his loan in January if he  isn’t worth keeping by that point.

Iago Falqué (Overview_ Attributes)

Sergio Araujo is a name that some of you may now as he has been a wonderkid in the last few versions of FM and he was listed by Boca so I decided he would be a good addition to the squad with potential to grow into a good player at this level. He has nice low wages as well.

Sergio Araujo (Overview_ Attributes)

Andrea Romano was signed on a free after he was release by Inter and I consider him to be a decent prospect. He will most likely not get much game time this year but if we get some injuries he will definitely step in.

Andrea Romanò (Overview_ Attributes)

Rasmus Falk is a player I have signed quite a few times before and he has always done very well for me so i was delighted to find that I was able to sign him for only £1.7M. He will be my second best CAM behind another new signing yet to be seen.

Rasmus Falk (Overview_ Attributes)

Patrick van Aanholt was at the time signed to be my first team left back but I have actually managed to sign a better player for this position in my opinion so he will be rotated. He came from Chelsea for a fee of £1.9M which was okay for the former PSV academy graduate.

Patrick van Aanholt (Overview_ Attributes)

Urby Emanuelson has come in loan from AC Milan after not being able to establish him self as a starter. He is actually a left midfielder however I have had him before and I always play him at left back and he performs really well even if he isn’t the best in defence. He will make some very good storming runs down the left flank and will give my team some width.

Urby Emanuelson (Overview_ Attributes)

Fernando Belluschi came in from Porto on a short two year deal as he will soon become not good enough even for a back up player so I will most likely look to sell him at the end of the season but he will do fine this season.

Fernando Belluschi (Overview_ Attributes)

Bernardo is a player who I have always tried to sign on FM with out ever actually managing to pull it off but I managed it this time. He will be my primary CAM and I will be expecting him to have a massive influence on the coming seasons as he has the quality to be a real match winner.

Bernardo (Overview_ Attributes)

Jack Colback will be in my starting line up as a ball winning midfielder i suspect and he fits the bill perfectly. This role in the team was really lacking as all of my other centre midfielders were more offensively minded so I needed to sign someone who would get the tackles in and win the ball back. For only £3.5M he fits the bill perfectly for me.

Jack Colback (Overview_ Attributes)

Joe Allen will also be in my starting line up taking up the role of playmaker in the midfield. He is more defensively minded than most playmakers but his good passing really makes up for it. He is also a brilliant team player so him and Colback will make a very fierce partnership.

Joe Allen (Overview_ Attributes)

Torsten Malinowski is definitely one for the future with his potential ability at 4.5 stars. He will be getting game time this year as I believe he is already a threat so will make appearances of the bench and play in the early cup rounds. I will be expecting great things from him in the coming seasons.

Torsten Malinowski (Overview_ Attributes)

Sebastian Eckardt is another player with huge potential however this time only being at 4 star. He will be playing in the U19’s for this season and then maybe he will get a loan deal to get him some first team action but we will see how he develops.

Sebastian Eckardt (Overview_ Attributes)

Outs

  • All of the free transfers were youngsters who were never going to make it and were just taking up wage in the reserves so I terminated their contracts.
  • van Overbeek, Memphis Depay, Funso Ojo, Jetro Willems and Abel Tamata were all youngsters who were good but they weren’t good enough to warrant a place in my first team roster so I decided to sell them and bring in as much money for them as possible.
  • Orlando Engelaar was past his best so I decided to sell him and I was actually very surprised at the amount of money I was able to get for him.
  • Emil Salomonsson was a right midfielder so just didn’t fit into the plans of my team and therefor was sold.
  • Irven Avila wanted out when I first came and was being disruptive than as soon as i accept an offer for him he begins asking to be took off the transfer list but I was having none of it as I only wanted players who were fully committed.
  • Andreas Isaksson was the aging No.1 when i took over but I decided to put my faith in his understudy Tyton and this meant Isaksson had to be sold and we managed to get quite a lot for him. He was also on quite high wages for a goalkeeper.
  • Antoine Griezmann was the one player who I was really unsure about, he was teh only winger we had that had real quality but that was the problem, he was the only one. This meant that I was looking to get rid of my wingers and play a narrow 4-1-2-1-2 so i had to sell him. He could play in CAM for me but I felt that I wouldn’t get the best out of him. In the end I sold him for £8M which was double his value so it worked out quite well.
  • Jan Schlaudruff was offered out but nobody wanted to take him on full time so I decided to let him out on loan and they have the option to buy him which i hope they use.
  • Domingues and Jeremain Lens were both wingers who were not that good but I managed to get a decent price for both of them as they moved to Premiership clubs. Lens was a little disappointing because he is a great talent but hadn’t really had the best of years recently and wanted to leave to.
  • Mathias Jorgenson left because he was not going to be in my starting eleven but was not far off quality wise. If he had a lower wage I would definitely have kept him as a back up but due to his wage he was sold to free up money.
  • Tim Matavz left the club because I wanted to free up more money for transfers but looking back on it I wish I had kept him because he was a decent Dutch player and my team don’t have to many at the minute.
  • Atiba Hutchinson left due to the incoming Allen and Colback who would be my starting centre mids so I decided it would be best if Atiba moved on due to his high wage and also he wouldn’t have liked being a back up player.

Staff

This is always one of my first priorities when I move to a new club. I love bringing in good staff who are going to make a real difference at the club in training and in scouting players. I was actually happy to keep the previous assistant manager but when he got a offer from another team I decided I would let him leave and search for a better one.

PSV (Transfers_ History)-2

The results of my change in staff worked really well and we now have a great set up.

PSV (Squad_ Training)

Friendlies

I let my assistant take control of the friendlies this year as I was to busy thinking about players to sign that I didn’t want to do them. They were quite poor but I’m sure with me taking control of games we will do much better as the assistant played some strange players.

PSV (Fixtures_ Fixtures)

Finances

We still have basically the same amount of money in the bank even with the large amount of spending so I would definitely consider this a success. This is probably due to the season ticket sales.

PSV (Boardroom_ Finances)

We are way under our wage budget and we still have a decent amount of money in the transfer budget so there could still be one or two more signing through the season.

PSV (Boardroom_ Board Overview)

This is the end of this post, sorry for the length of it but I made so many new signings and a lot of explaining for my selling so it had to be quite big. Thanks for reading and which of my new players do you think will be the best signing or the worst?

Welcome to a new chapter in this story as we leave Panathinaikos after doing the league and cup double two season in a row. The second season however was draining and it took i’s toll on me so I decided a change was necessary  to get this blog back on track and here it is. I was offered the job of managing PSV Eindhoven who are currently playing in the Dutch Eredivisie and they finished 4th and seven points behind the leaders in the season just gone. My sole objective with PSV is to win the league within at least three seasons. I have some smaller objectives and these are mainly winning the Dutch Cup and qualifying out of the Champions League group stages when applicable.

Eredivisie (Overview_ Stages)

History

PSV (History_ Competitions)

PSV are undoubtedly one of the most successful clubs in Holland having won the Eredivisie a staggering 21 times. They also have two European honours with them winning both the Champions League and the Europa League once. They won these trophies in the years 1988 and 1978 respectively. This means it has been a while since European glory and I think they will have to wait at least until next season before we think about winning in Europe. They were dominant in Holland most recently between the years 1997 and 2008 winning the league 8 out of 11 seasons and the 2008 success it the last time they have won the league and I am definitely changing that.

Finances

PSV (Boardroom_ Finances)

PSV are an extremely wealthy club and having that amount of money in the bank is something I only could have dreamed about at Panathinaikos and I will definitely use it wisely if they decide to give a lot to me.

I have been given a four year deal worth £22K p/w which is a huge rise on what I was being paid back in Greece. I have yet to receive the expected budget for next season but looking at the finances of the club it should be quite a substantial amount if the board are willing to back me which it would appear so as the compensation to PAO was a hefty £1M.

Facilities

PSV (Information_ Facilities)

PSV are still playing in their original stadium and it now has a capacity of 35,000 which is a little on the small side but we will fix this if it is necessary. The most exciting thing about PSV is it’s brilliant training and youth facilities which are backed up by excellent junior coaching and a well established youth recruitment so I am hoping to uncover some gems from the academy in the coming years.

Season One Objectives

  • Qualify for the Champions League.
  • Reach the semi final of the Dutch Cup.
  • Bring in a whole new back room staff who will help me improve the players and the clubs scouting capabilities.
  • Reach the quarter finals of the Europa League.

Squad Analysis

Goalkeepers

  • Przemyslaw Tyton will be my starting goal keeper this year as he is definitely the best. He will probably remain my number one for the rest of my stint at PSV
  • Andreas Isaksson will be sold as he is slightly worse than Tyton and is on a high wage so we need to free that up and bring in a little money to spend on new players.
  • Jeroen Zoet is a good enough player to be a back up and at only 22 he has time to improve. He is also on a very low wage so this is another reason to keep him.

Przemyslaw Tyton (Overview_ Attributes)

Centre Backs

  • Bruno Ecuele Manga is definitely they best centre back at the club and he is an absolutely beast so will definitely be staying.
  • Christian Ramos will be Mangas defensive partner this season as he is also a very solid player who has good pace so will be very useful.
  • Marcelo and Timothy Derijck will be my back ups for this position. Marcelo will be the first to step in and then Derijck.
  • Mathias Jorgensen is actually better than Derijck but he has nearly double the wage so I am going to be selling him if possible as I don’t want to pay him that wage to be on the bench.

Bruno Ecuélé Manga (Overview_ Attributes)Christian Ramos (Overview_ Attributes)

Right Backs

  • Denis Odoi will be my starting right back as he had a good season and got an average rating of above 7.00 so I will be hoping for him to repeat this again.
  • Stanislav Manolev will hopefully be leaving the club but this is dependent on me bringing in a new young prospect at right back and this is not a priority.

Denis Odoi (Overview_ Attributes)

Left Backs

  • We currently do not have a single recognised left back at the club and last season we had Reto Ziegler on loan from Juventus but he is not good enough for me so I will definitely be looking to bring in two left backs.

Defensive Midfielders

  • Ivo Pekalski is the only recognised defensive midfielder in the team so i will be bring one more in as a back up to him as Ivo is very talented himself.
  • Stijn Wuytens will be a back up to Pekalski as he has a low wage and is good enough to at least hold his own in their and he has good potential.

Ivo Pekalski (Overview_ Attributes).

Central Midfielders

  • Atiba Hutchinson is currently my best centre mid at 3.5 star ability but I am unsure if I should sell him and bring in a younger player to fill his boots. If I don’t do this he will definitely be starting.
  • Amir Abrashi is my second best centre mid but he will most likely act as a back up for Atiba as I will probably be signing a new centre mid to partner Atiba (if he stays that is). He is not good enough to be a first team starter in my opinion.
  • Claudio Mosca will be kept as he will be very good back up for the centre mid position and if he improves could become a starter.
  • Orlando Engelaar will most likely be sold even though he had a good season but he is now 33 so I think his best days are behind him.

Atiba Hutchinson (Overview_ Attributes)

Amir Abrashi (Overview_ Attributes)

Attacking Midfielders

  • We currently have no out and out attacking midfielder so I will be bringing in two. One will be my starter and the other a young prospect who will be able to challenge for a spot in 1-2 seasons.

Strikers

  • Jelle Vossen is currently the best striker at the club but in my opinion he is a very strange player as I don’t think I really know how to get the best out of him. I have always considered buying him but always refused to do so as he is not physically fast or strong. I will be keeping him this season to see what he is like.
  • Who will partner him upfront though is yet to be decided. Three players are all of roughly the same ability so I will be seeing if I can sell one or two of them and then bring in a new strike partner for Vossen to make our attack a force to be reckoned with. Irven Avila, Tim Matavz and Mohamed Bangura are the three p[layers in contention.

Jelle Vossen (Overview_ Attributes)

Mohamed Bangura (Overview_ Attributes)

Tim Matavz (Overview_ Attributes)

Irven Ávila (Overview_ Attributes)

Remaining players who I have not mentioned will most likely be sold as they do not fit into the formation I am going to employ so it means all the wingers we currently have will be sold.

That is it for my introduction to the PSV squad and everything else about the club, I hope you enjoyed it. What do you think of my new choice of club?

In my next post I will feature my transfers, friendlies and the games in the Europa League.

It has been a while since I last posted an update to this story and the main reason behind this was a real lack of motivation behind writing up the post which would have included the months November and December, I had played through the two months and found my self becoming very easily broed whilst doing so as I would only play one match then come off the game. I decided just to stop playing football manager for a bit but today I went back on it and thought to myself I may as well finish the season with Panathinaikos and see how I feel about writing it up and continuing on. So i have now finished the season and can tell you it went really despite me rushing through it. First I will just show you some screenshots of my success and then about my plans for this blog.

Well as was expected of us from everybody in Greece and myself we won the League with relative ease and we only lost 4 games throughout the whole season which is an improvement on last season however we actually finished on two less points which is disappointing as we were in Europe for much longer last season with our impressive Europa league season. Olympiakos had a disappointing season with managerial changes and some of their better players leaving January due to their poor performance but they actually managed to improve towards the end of teh season and won in the play-offs for Champions League football which is best for Greek football.

Greek Superleague (Overview_ Stages)

We managed to qualify out of our group in the Champions League in second place which meant we would have to play the winners of a group. We were drew against PSG and I knew it was going to be extremely hard to get anywhere close to them but and in the end we lost 5-1 on aggregate as we lost 2-1 at home them 3-0 away in Paris.

European Champions Cup (Overview_ Stages)Panathinaikos AO (Fixtures_ Fixtures)

In January I made a lot of signings and mainly all from Czech Republic and they were all of 4 star potential which is brilliant for the prices I signed them at. This was to ensure the future of the club if I decide to leave at the end of the season as I was considering. I sold Leto one of my best players to fund these signings but they will definitely be worth it and the sale of Leto only meant I could move in a young Greek Kolovos to play there instead.

Panathinaikos (Transfers_ History)

Towards the end of the season I was receiving lots of messages to my inbox saying how I was the favourite to be handed the manager job at quite a few reputable clubs from Villarreal to Everton. This was making me think that I could probably do better as a manager and that maybe now was the time to leave and move on which is something I practically never do in Football Manager as I like to build a club from the bottom up but I haven’t really done this with Panathinaikos. I have come up with an idea where I become a Journeyman and try and win as many league titles in different countries as I possibly could before FM13. I would really like to give this a go as it’s a different way of playing fm for me so I applied for a job in a new country and they accepted me.  I will introduce you to this next post.

In this post I will be talking about my progress in the new season and how we have done in the Champions League. These are the fixtures for the next two months. I am expecting an unbeaten season in the league this year and if we can’t achieve that then at least an unbeaten season at home would be nice.

Panathinaikos AO (Fixtures_ Fixtures)-2

Greek Superleague Results

The opening game of the season was against PAOK, the team I beat in last years Greek Cup Final, and I was expecting a very tough game. In all honesty we absolutely battered them and I just can’t believe we didn’t score sooner. When Vitor got sent off for them we dominated play and were playing really well but Christodoulopoulos got a second yellow for diving in the box the game changed and it was much more even. We did manage to get the one important goal as substitute and debutant Pasquato scored from a Leto cross.

PAOK v Panathinaikos (Information_ Overview)

The game after PAOK was against recently promoted Pierikos and we really struggled and only just managed to win 3-2, we kept on taking the lead and then giving it away until we got the third and we actually managed to stay ahaed. Then we went up against Panionios who I was expecting a tough game against we actually played amazing and managed to batter them 4-0 with Pasquato getting a brace. Xanthi were up next and we replicated our previous result but this time Yaya got a hat trick sealing an easy win for us. The next game was against Levadeiakos who w really should be beating and we played extremely poor and just couldn’t get going which was really disappointing but we put this result behind us and carry on. We then had two games against Tripolis and Atromitos where we played really well getting two very comfortable wins which is pleasing.

Panathinaikos AO (Fixtures_ Fixtures)

We are the only team to remain unbeaten so far this season and we are top of the league by only one point but I reckon we can pull away in the next one or two months.

Greek Superleague (Overview_ Stages)

Champions League Results

The first game was against Malaga at home and I went for a very attacking line up and we did really well. It began really badly however as we went a goal down as Cazorla scored a tap in. I feared the worst at this point but after that they didn’t really have a sniff at goal for the rest of the game.

Panathinaikos v Málaga (Information_ Overview)

The next champions league game was against Metalist and this would be a tougher test than the Malaga game due to it being away and a hostile atmosphere. It was an extremely tight game and both teams created plenty of chances but just couldn’t score in the first half. We finally scored in the second half as Christodoulopoulos scored from a cross and we doubled our league late on. They did pull back a goal but it was only a consolation.

Metalist v Panathinaikos (Information_ Overview)

The final champions league game of this month and we welcomed the big boys Manchester United to Athens. I was really unsure how I should approach this game and decided to use my attacking tactic but I played most of the game on counter and defend. We had to soak up an awful lot of pressure throughout the game but hit them on the break a number of times and we actually punished them three times making the game 3-0. This was a great performance and i can’t quite believe it and this means we have won all three of our Champions League games which is much more than I was expecting.

Panathinaikos v Man Utd (Information_ Overview)

We have played extremely well in the Champions League and I am extremely proud with how we have done against some good teams. I will now be looking to finish first in this group as it’s definitely possible.

European Champions Cup (Overview_ Stages)

In this post I will be telling you about the teams preseason friendlies and which tactics I will be using for the forthcoming season. Also there will be some information on the Champions League and our group.

This is the first time with Panathinaikos where I have been able to plan my own preseason friendlies and for me it is the best way of doing it compared to letting your assistant take on that responsibility. The first game was against our affiliates in the Greek Second Division, we played really well dominating everything but we just didn’t score as many as we should’ve. A good start to preseason though. We then went to England to play Southampton, who invited us to play, and we were very disappointing this game with them taking an early lead and we never really recovered. We then embarked on my customary tour of Italy as I always like to do, this gives me a good idea of where the team is at and also reduces the time spent travelling. We played really well in Italy and our first two game we beat Crotone and Lecce 7-0. We the played Bari and won 4-0 and the final game was against Empoli where we actually drew 1-1 but I wasn’t disappointed in this final result as I played my full second side for this game. I was really impressed with the way my players performed in this tour of Italy and it gave me great hope for the new season. The next two games were against weak Greek teams just to get some game time so I wasn’t that fussed about the score. The final game of preseason saw us host AC Milan in what turned out to be a bit of a drubbing. IO take responsibility for this result as I was meant to be playing my counter attacking formation but I forgot to click on the play button on the tactic so we went out playing very open attacking football and we were rightly punished. By the time I realised this we were already losing and when i changed it back we did manage to score a goal.

These are the  three tactics i will be using for this season. The first will be used in game where we are clear favourites and we should dominate the play. The second and third will be used when we are playing against superior teams with better players or if we are holding on to a lead in a second leg.

This is how things look for us in the Champions League, I am fairly confident we will put up a good fight in this group and maybe snatch second spot but if not my target is definitely getting third place so that we can carry on in the Europa League. In the group we have the current defending champions Manchester United who beat Real Madrid in last seasons final, Malaga and Metalist. The games against Metalist and Malaga will definitely be key and if we stay strong at home we might stand a good chance of getting through.
